What are Zines? How to Use Them in the Classroom

June 9, 2019 by Literacy and Math Ideas Leave a Comment

Teach, review, and help students visualize with zines.

I think I have a new love.  I absolutely LOVE zines.  A zine is a tiny booklet that provides information.  It is a handmade booklet that can be created to describe, persuade, or inform about any topic.

Using Zines in the Classroom

Finding writing center activities that appeal to upper elementary, middle school, and high school students can be challenging.  The goals are to have students practice writing and want to do it.  This is where zines come in to help.  Since zines look like tiny booklets, students do not feel as though they are writing an essay.  Plus, zines enable students to get creative.  They can add artwork, illustrations, plus graphs and charts to their texts. Use them in math and reading too!

How to Make A Zine

A few days ago, I stayed up into the wee hours in the morning making math zines.  I needed to review geometry with a student.  Then the idea came to me, create zines!

When students create their own booklets and add illustrations, it adds meaning to what they create. Teacher created zines are fun too because they present information in a unique way.

Free Math Flipbook (Addition with Regrouping)

April 24, 2019 by Literacy and Math Ideas Leave a Comment

Flipbooks are nothing short of amazing. This early form of animation involves having several images that gradually change. When the pages are flipped with a finger, it looks at though the images can move. I have seen flipbooks with jumping shapes, marriage proposals, and more.

I began to wonder if I could make a flipbook that is educational.

This is my rough draft. Click the link above to access the free, finished version.

I created this free flipbook that reviews addition with regrouping. Then, I thought it would be fun to make zines (small booklets) that could also review the same concept. Everything is so high-tech that I thought it would be fun to create a tool that was low-tech that kids love.

My unfolded math zine.
